Just a question of terminology but is it still a dig "face" if you are stood on it, or would shaft bottom be more correct?

Well done by the way, keep it up and there will soon be a "fat basta*ds" entrance to Upper Flood  ;)

Isn't there a gentleman's agreement not to dig second entrances into caves if they only serve the purpose of making things easier?  ;)

Well, the obvious question would be: Are fat bastards gentlemen?

It depends where you are, Chris. I know of a couple of access control bodies who will not allow second entrances to be dug to certain caves and I can think of another who regret it having been done in the past. However, I can envisage circumstances where it might be preferable for conservation reasons to engineer a bypass to particularly fragile bits of cave. It's an intriguing argument, however, for what is done can rarely be undone and you would be relying on cavers behaving in line with the policy in the future. I am not sure that degree of restraint can always be guaranteed.

Just for the record - although Mick is posting progress reports for Stainsby's Shaft in the ACG forum, I should point out that it is actually an MCG dig. I guess he is posting here because the MCG doesn't have a section on UKCaving (we have our own newsgroup on our own website) and Mick is a member of MCG and ACG (and BDCC).

As a conditioin of access, all digging trips in Stainsby's must be recorded in the Blackmoor Log at MCG's cottage so that an annual report can be made to the landowners, SCC. (In fact all MCG trips in Stainsby's, digging or otherwise, need to go in the Blackmoor Log.)

But of course, Mick will know this as he is MCG's access officer

ACG members (and BDCC) are of course welcome to continue digging with us and we appreciate their assistance  ;)

And I thought they were just clearing out an old mine. A laudable action in its own right.

It would not be the first attempt to dig another entrance to Upper Flood anyway.

Are you meaning Upper Flood Two
Or is there another I don't know.
You would be skinny enough to get through the squeezes into the new stuff Elaine.

We will  continue to drop
The Stainsby's Dig
all weekend, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of February.
Why not participate, be involved in making history,
we are now 30 - 35 metres below the surface and have a stream.
Alan has recently used the Pony to make a survey of this mine.
Digging conditions pretty good.

Having been there I can say (a) yes, it's impressive work they've been doing and (b) it is very promising (ie cold). Good luck!

PS: it's a tad loose at the moment so it's not a wise idea to visit until stabilisation works continue.

Now, slowish going, mucho scaffolding, perhaps we dropped one and a half metres yeterday.
Quite dry underground with virtually no draught.
