EVENT - Compton Martin Ocher Mine renovation - 7th Feb 2008

I am restarting the Compton martin renovation trips in on 7th Feb 2008.
Meeting at the mine entrance, or inside if your late.
7pm Start, end in time for the pub @ Ring O Bells.
Full protective gear recommended, gloves, wellys oversuit and change of clothes etc as it will stain your clothing.

Plenty of places as plenty to do and people can spread them selfs around.
Open to all.

Objective - To clear and in some cases to lower the floor (back to its mined height?) to enable future wooden supports to be installed. Lots of wall buildng with deads. artefact's to be retrieved and protected. I'd like to see the rails again. Please let me know if you can attend.

Oh it was t'proper jobby with power point slides, handouts and demonstrations.

I had forgotten that the mine is NOT closed by bats but the landowner closes the mine every Jan so it doesn't become a right of way.

Attending: Known & Madrab + Root.

On entering the mine I was reminded of how red it was and noticed a few rocks had dropped from the roof in the short time we had been away, answering peoples question of just how exactly does the floor get covered in so much rubble. The place is more unstable then I had thought. We made our way though, saw a couple of bats flying about and reached the 1st junction were we discussed things. Then Known said "Bloody Hell! look at that!" I turned and shreeked like a girl as we had not noticed a couple of bats roosting behind us, we moved away quietly and found some were to dig. I carried on digging were I had left off, building a new wall opposite to a new one I had already started. It was looking good. Les W & Darren turned up and had a bit of a look around and we had a chat about bats and things and trips and forums and dropping stones on peoples heads accidentally. Then having finished the new wall and madrab shoveled some loose stones ontop we left, my stenlight fading as the battery was running very low, not sure if its duff or I miscalculated how much I had used it, my backup assisted my exit. We all screamed our way back to the Hunters were Madrab was introduced to th caving community. Baptism by fire springs to mind hehe  We discussed past trips and future trips and routes and Organized a Thursday trip.

As C&A Officer I do feel a tad guilty. As a result of our visit the hard working restoration team were encouraged to finish their work early and we all made it to the Hunters by 9:15pm   

I am certain that if we hadn't visited them they would have worked through to 10:30 and rushed into the "Ring 'o Bells" for last orders. 

Our intervention resulted in around 4.5 lost man hours of restoration work 

Keep it up root, it's looking good in there now.

Yes Graham its it suitable for beginners and no SRT is required, if you need help getting though the entrance I am sure we can form a team to help. If bending is a problem I recommend crawling the 1st 20ft.

Bit at a time, this is a long term project.

I would have replied to this thread sooner, but LesW has delegated next Thursdays lecture to me. Apparently if you think roots going to turn up you have to have a 10 minute lecture prepared just in case.  If you know roots going to turn up then then a full 20 minutes is the very minimum acceptable.

So far I've managed 12 minutes on the pros and cons of Bunny ears and Italian hitches, I was thinking of winding up with short practical on how to love your ladder.
