More wellies

I usually get my steel toed wellies from A J Wyatt at Stowey (nr Chew Valley Lake). But they've now gone up to about ?19. But I notice on Cap'n Chris' link they have the Dickies saftey wellies at ?14.95 + postage http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MENS-DICKIES-WELLINGTONS-SUPER-SAFETY-BOOTS-STEEL-TOE-CAPS-WELLIES-BOOTS-SHOES-/380532284835?pt=UK_Men_s_Shoes&var=&hash=item975b84a626. I think I might have to go back to Dickies (Midsomer Norton) where I used to get them from and see if they are stocking them again at a reasonable price.

Ps. Lets not let this turn into a debate on the pros and cons steel toes or not. I'm sure it's been done before. :read:

Ta, for this Cap'n, whilst bimbling around tonight in a cave, noticed the soles on my cheapo French bought wellybobs have split. Have ordered a new pair!

(I also promise not to infer you don't have a life anymore, and I promise to watch more Tv.)

The wellies the good Cap'n links to are the Dunlop Pricemastors (I think the spelling is intentionally wrong, though lots of online sellers correct it), you can spot them by the three horizontal lines on the calf. They're the cheapest brand Dunlop sells. These seem to have a pretty minimalist tread patten (which often the online shops do not show):
http://www.dunlopboots.com/en/product/pricemastor-0

Also available are slightly more expensive 'Dunlop Universals' which seem to have a sole patten more like the old Suretreads, and can be recognised by the pairing loop on the back of the calf:
http://www.dunlopboots.com/en/product/universal-0

And recently launched are the 'Dunlop Riverdale' - these have the tri-star sole pattern of another of the old Dunlop makes (green / yellow souls):

Cap'n - how do you find the Pricemastors? Are they actually rubber soled, not PVC or Nitrile?
Does anyone have any experience with these other Dunlops?

We're trying to find a good brand to standardise on for our (uni) club wellies...
I'm really frustrated in that I can't seem to find any datasheets from Dunlop, would be nice to have some hard facts about soles / upper materials, and weight per pair etc.

On the plus side, through this obsessive googling I've found a whole community of people who spend their time photographing themselves in wellies & uploading them to the Internet:

Sounds like you've written a good brief for a research project for yourself there, Mr. J!

In answer to your questions:
Happy enough to have purchased numerous pairs.
Rubber.

Ah, fair does. I guess this is the sort of useful thing it's easy enough to do with a university caving club + shared kit. I'll order a Universal and Pricemastor pair, and then see I can convince another volunteer to trial them over a weekend. Will report back.

Love how all the photos in the group are by the same guy, haha! where are the naked chicks in wellies? That'd be kinda hot! I should know, the uk cave calendar hanging up has a girl like that for January!

Interesting that folk willing to pay ?600+ for a lamp will quibble over a couple of quid on the cost of a pair of wellies...

Isn't good grip under foot that important these days?

Or am I confusing two entirely different sets of cavers?

I have got Universals for my groups and I've used them myself when mine are wet. They are very good wellington but a bit narrow for my broad feet and my right foot starts to ache if I cave longer than 5-6 hours in them.

Couldn't get Universals in the smaller sizes so went for the River Dales which appear to be ok but I've not tried them personally

A size 45 Universal + Pricemastor arrived in time for a couple of trips down Swildons at the weekend.

They're both superior to worn old Suretreds would be my first point, plenty of grip in the wet but clean Swildons.

The Pricemastor sole is nearly as deep as universal, but tread more fine and much less deep (particularly on heel) - so I suspect they won't cope as well with mud. Both the Pricemastor and Universal have fairly flexible soles, but not worse than the recent made-in-Portugal batch of Suretreds.

The Pricemastor uppers seem to have less structure in them - the Universal has a proper bulbous toe box area, whereas the Pricemastors just have a continuous region (i.e. more like a 3-panel wet sock construction). I suspect this area on the Pricesmator will abrade fairly quickly while caving.

So the Universal definitely seems a better boot, all other things considered. But whether it justifies the ?18 vs. ?11 price tag (P&P included, cheapest eBay sellers for a single unit), I'm not sure.

I'll take some comparative  photos later in the week if it's useful.
