Michel Castel de Courval, bookseller 1935-1979

Michel de Courval now rests in the cemetery of Tayac, which is not far from the old church at the foot of the rocks. There, he looks out over the cliffs of Tayac, les Eyzies Castle and the opening of the Gorge d'Enfer.

Michel Castel de Courval was only 4I years old when, death suddenly struck him at Les Eyzies where he went each summer to his second hand book shop.  We all knew this famous speleologist, originally from Gascogne (Casteljaloux) who later became a great specialist in old books on geology, prehistory and speleology. One was almost sure to find at his house, the review or the book which one wanted. One was also .certain of meeting in Paris or at Les Eyzies some friends who were passing though. Michel. de Courval was always kindly, smiling, full of joy of life humorous and gay. This will no longer be so.

He leaves a wife, Michele, and a daughter, Sophie. He had only been married two years and Sophie was not yet one.
