Gauber Pot - entrance restoration

The restoration of Gauber Pot
A few weeks ago on the 8th August a team of CNCC/ Natural England Volunteers were drafted in to help restore the entrance to Gauber Pot SD 766786 situated on Park Fell. Although it only has a depth of 15 metres it might have some potential. The only trouble is the entrance has been inaccessible for decades blocked by a huge amount of asbestos roofing dumped there in less enlightened times. The first job was to remove the asbestos and then make an assessment of how best to make the entrance cattle proof. The team assembled on the 8th and several members of the team kitted up in gear provided by Andrew Hinde from Natural England. Safety was paramount and everybody working near the covered entrance was held by a safety rope. A long days work saw most of the asbestos removed and taken down to Colt Park for safe removal. All that remained was to get the team back to cover the entrance and make it stock proof. This was carried out on the 1st September. The project was funded in part from CNCC and the Stories in Stone project.  This scheme has been developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership and is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Stories in Stone will run from January 2016 to the end of 2019.Go to  www.ydmt.org/programme-details-stories-in-stone-16115 for more details. Maybe you have other projects that could be put forward for funding?

Are the CNCC vols eligible for an award? (And do you have any awards suitable for a team made up of perhaps 6 separate clubs?)

Hi Pegasus,
Can you enter us in for the Cave Conservation Rewards? Not sure how to do this. Also I have some brilliant photos of the work we did but was only able to post 3 of them. Is it possible to put some more on?
Cheers

Great to be part of the team. Took us three sessions of hard work but satisfying. Gauber pot has horrid entrance climb to nice 9m pitch with bright orange flowstone against black background of shale. Pot ended in too narrow continuation.

Many congratulations to the CNCC volunteers and others involved in this conservation work.  I understand it was a particularly unpleasant job and very expensive to remove the material from site.  Hopefully dumping of this nature is a thing of the past.

After some consultation with those involved Ukcaving has decided not to offer a reward to the volunteers.  Of course they do deserve a reward but this is more than we have to offer.  The Ukcaving conservation reward scheme is aimed at those smaller groups of cavers who would not normally think to clean up our caves and hopes to help change attitudes towards a more conservation minded caver for the future.

The CNCC volunteers do a great job already and work in conjunction with Natural England.  The Gauber project was part of the much larger Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership scheme and there will be many more under this scheme to come.

Ukcaving wishes to help promote conservation where it can and hopes that Pete and others will continue to write up future efforts for us all to see.  Publicising conservation work at all levels will keep it in the minds of cavers, helping to improve attitudes and encouraging more to get involved.

Keep it up  (y)

Let's see your other photos please.  Each post is limited to 4 photos or a maximum of 512KB.  Start a new post or use the alternative method if they are already hosted on Photobucket, Flickr etc.

See http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=19799.0 for photo posting help.
