Interesting!  Mr Whitehouse seems to think that the caves on Staffa have been carved out of the columnar basalt by human hands (Kelto-Iberians?  Wends?  Guys fom Mendip?) rather than by the action of the sea.  He seems - at a quick read - to be suggesting that they might have been dug out as boathouses or landing places, but although the sea goes into Fingal's cave today I gather that it is not easy to sail into it.

What do other people think? Is there a book...?  Is this worth a thread of its own?

One look at the aerial photography on Google Maps seems to suggest there are strong linear features running across the island. I assume the caves have something to do with these. Obviously aerial photography would not have been available in 1882.

Thanks Guys - this is the wrong area of the forum for debate no one seems to want most of these items, before I send the free items to recycling  please shout now via PM

Tony happy enough to send to you but in the first instance would rather give priority and first refusal to Cavers
