...So a small tough manual compact would be the ideal caving camera.

Anyone used one of these or got any opinions on it? Or should I just consider one of the other (non-rugged) Powershot cameras and use it 'carefully'?

My current camera, whilst water/shock-proof and still working after all those years of abuse is past its best, bulky, lacking in quality and in need of retiring! I've been dithering for ages trying to find something (small compact, don't want SLR even though they are very good!) that might work with my Firefly 2, although a while back I resigned myself to either using long shutter or upgrading the slave.. :(

Looking forward to when they put this software/hardware into a tough case...

Canon releases IXUS 300HS premium compact with manual control

Canon has released the PowerShot SD4000 IS (IXUS 300HS in Europe) ultra-compact camera. It features the company's new 'HS' system that promises better low-light performance and high-speed photography through a combination of a 10MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor. It sports a 28-105mm equivalent f/2.0-5.3 stabilized zoom lens (much like that seen on the S90), 3 inch LCD and P/A/S/M shooting modes. The camera also features a Super Slow Motion movie mode that records 340x240 movies at 240fps, as well as 720p HD movies capture.

Hi,

We used our D10 to shoot underwater videos during our recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The video qualify (SD) was fine - much better when there was more light. After 2 hours, though, the screen went black and could not be powered on. We removed the card and checked for water, but did not see any. The card was fine, though, so we had our videos. We sent the camera to Canon under warranty repair. They said that there was water damage and replaced the camera for free with a brand new one - not refurbished. I had read where the seals on the initial batches of these cameras had problems, which Canon had fixed. So far so good with the new camera.
