Interesting background reading to the access debate

Hasn't that got specifically to do with access to rivers for kayaking/canoeing rather than anything to do with caving?

Aye, although the word 'access' appears, the management issues are utterly different.

I've always agreed with Monbiot that Benyon's a knob, though.

Fascinating article.    Demonstrates the landowners base position very well.

Seems like the spirit of Kinder Scout is still needed 70 years on, and that does still apply to caving.

The point is that there is no law to stop people canoeing where they like as no-one owns the navigation rights to the river (something i always thought anyway), just like there is no law that can stop people going caving on open access land (something i have always done anyway).
and anyway whats the point of fishing just to throw the fecker back in the river after sitting waiting in the rain for hours - i mean what is the point?

The main point is 0.6 percent of the population owning the majority of the land.

I've always been a proponent of a land tax. This would  prevent single families hanging onto millions of acres for ever and allow people who wish to build their own home, own a small holding or whatever to do so. It would also result in a far more productive use of the land.
