Description
7m pitch on a builders ladder leads to 8m of descending passage. This drops onto another pitch about 5m deep. Off the bottom of this pitch is a mud filled passage that is now being dug.
History
Crem was first dug by Monty Grainger in 1939. EPC had a go in the 50s and SUSS started in the 70s spurred on by resistivity surveys that suggested large cavities in the rock. Attention switched to local mines and Long Rake was opened in DATE REQUIRED. In 1993 the dig was restarted by SUSS and activity has continued, on and off, ever since.
In Mid 2006 a bicycle powered winch was installed on the surface together with improved chutes for the buckets and a railway at the bottom, reminiscent of something from a prisoner of war escape tunnel.
