Description

The Great Orme is a large limestone headland containing a large number of copper mines, with workings dating back from the Victorian to the Bronze Age. The Bronze Age workings have been developed as a tourist attraction. During the 19century the three main mines were the New Mine, Old Mine and Ty Gwyn Mine.

Some of the entrances are:

  • Penmorfa Adit SH 7709 8223. Altitude: 10m. Adit on west shore leading to Vivian's Shaft and Treweek's Shaft.
  • Ty Gwyn Adit SH 7817 8273. Altitude: 10m. The adit is accessed through a manhole near the pier. Leads to Tyn y Fron shaft.
  • Treweek's Shaft SH 7701 8327. Altitude: 165m. 80m deep.
  • Pyllau Shaft SH 7704 8302. Altitude: 140m. 70m deep. Main shaft for New Mine.
  • Vivian's Shaft SH 7707 8309. Altitude: 140m. 70m deep. Situtated within the Bronze Age Copper Mines tourist attraction.
  • Romans' Shaft SH 7707 8332. Altitude: 165m.
  • Tyn y Fron Shaft SH 7775 8292. Altitude: 75m. 90m deep to sea level. Part of the Ty Gwyn mine.
  • Porth yr Helig SH 7747 8380. Altitude: 35m.
  • Haulfre Gardens Shaft SH 7745 8252. Altitude: 100m. Trial.
  • Parc Wall Trial SH 7600 8320. Altitude: 90m. Trial near top of Orme.
  • Bronze Age Copper Mines SH 7707 8309. Altitude: 140m.
