Introduction
The Dolgellau Gold Belt lies to the north of Dolgellau bounding Mawddach estuary. Prior to 1843, mines in the area were working copper. Most active period 1843 to 1865 during which 15,000 ounces extracted. 25 years of sporadic mining then rich lode discovered in Gwynfynydd. By 1930s 126,000 ounces recovered. 150 trial shafts and levels. Gold is found in the Cambrian Clogau Shales which outcrop in a crescent from Barmouth in the south, to the north of Dolgellau and northwards towards Trawsfynydd.
