On Sandford Hill, approximately 500m east of ski centre. Follow the lower path from ski centre into the woods and the entrance should be visible from the path.

No known access restrictions. Park in the Mendip Ski centre car park and ask permission to park.


Description

Sandford Levvy (nr Mendips Ski Center) - A long 450m dug tunnel into the hill with two major junctions with passages, drops and upward extensions. Used using WW2 by the Home Guard/Secret Army with bunk beds and featured on Secret Underground TV.

History

The tunnel was started in 1830 under the direction of Mr Webster, trying to find a worthwhile ore body but was a commercial failure. The mine was used by the local home guard during WW2, bunk bed were setup, wood fragments can be seen on the floor.
