Postimage Issues ?

This from another forum -

"It now appears that a few days ago Postimage have changed their domain from Postimage.org to Postimage.cc
I do not know why they have done this and there may be a good reason, however, the consequences appear to have been catastrophic.
It has broken all the image links used before the date of this change. Their advice apparently is to repost the image links - this must run into the hundreds of millions worldwide!!
I have 3,337 images stored in 54 galleries with them. These have been linked to posts in a number of different forums with many of them duplicate posts.
I haven't done an accurate count but it would mean I would have to repost in the region of 7,000 to 8,000 image links across these different forums to get the posts back as they were!!
It can be done but will obviously take some considerable time and I wonder if it is worth it."

I used Postimage after the Photobucket debacle. This may now mean yet again that older threads have been ruined.

No ruddy wonder folk are using Facebook.

Is it free? If so stop whingeing. We get all this stuff for free like this forum. In the past to exchange views we had to use telephones (charge) or post (charge). The company has to support itself financially by advertising etc. My generation cannot believe it when people complain like this. If you want a  service you can complain about  you have topay  for it.  Sorry, rant over.

As I've mentioned many, many times before, the only way to truly resolve this issue is to rent your own webspace. It's so cheap that it's pointless even thinking about it. For about a fiver a month, you can have gigabytes of storage space, and you totally control security and access. And as it's yours, you can big it up and customise it to your heart's desire. So you don't need to go near facebook, if displaying images is all you need.

Stuff all of these 'free' outfits - the business model is ridiculous, and will only get more cut-throat and exploitative, and simple changes like this at the root level can make past posts as described above an admin nightmare. That's why they're doing it - they've got you by the balls by this point. I'm relatively skint compared to most, but I've been paying for webspace for over 15 years, as it's too important to not have it.

No. You pay with your data.

Old Ruminator, do you think the change at Postimage might be connected with the recent Facebook thing? Maybe they wanted all users to agree to new terms.

I agree with pwhole it is the best way for you OR.  After the Photobucket fiasco (loud curse) we rented our own webspace for photos and haven't looked back.  You can also attach photos to posts on here where they will be stored on the forum servers although this is not ideal for many users.  We've also added a plug-in to display videos better than ever before.

What we notice about Face Book is that posts are here today and lost tomorrow - not to mention data harvesting allegedly used to alter the free will of democracy, or stir up hatred leading to the slaughter of hundreds of people in Burma, or terrorist recruitment, trolling public figures, revenge porn and all the other things people complain about face book such as the announcement from Wetherspoon's this morning that they and their pubs are no longer going to use facebook.....

Blimey nearly had a rant myself there  ;)

Hi OR, after our issue with photobucket (bastards) and once we had sorted out our own webspace I spend hours reposting all my photo links I'd put on UKC via both facebook (as they soon disappear as well when linked to third parties) and latterly photobucket (bastards).  Was it worth it?  For me, yes absolutely - it feels right that the links work properly again and will be there saved and ready should any caver want to look at what I've posted in the future.  Paying for webspace was a good decision as we have peace of mind that what happened with photobucket (bastards) won't happen with another company - after all, they aren't charities and commercialism will win out in the end.

Regarding facebook, yes many cavers do use it however I would remind folks - UKC is run by cavers for cavers on a not for profit basis, facebook is owned by billionaires who do not give one jot about caving, caves or cavers.  I run the fb page of UKC purely to remind facebook users about the forum.  So please folks, support the forum and post on here too - thanks very much  (y)  and of course, thanks to all those who do already  (y)

So what happens if you die or get fed up with caving ? There is no more guarantee of longevity this way either.

Its the futile promises they make that annoys me. Lies basically. I asked Photobucket years ago about longevity and they assured me that all would be well. Of course that may well have been true whilst they were mulling around with proposals to put the hosting fees sky high. You have until December to see any of my Photobucket ( Bastards ) images here. My Postimage images before this week are already gone. At least " Chunky " can no longer address the proliferation of same.

I take it as another blip in life and no point worrying at my age.

They are all Bastards ! :chair:

This from another forum -

" I have now started to retrieve postimage images and although a little time consuming it is not as difficult as I thought it might have been.
It involves going into each post and inserting cc in place of org in the postimage url's
As an administrator I can do other members posts as well so I will just keep plodding through as and when time permits!!"

No. I am not suggesting the mods do this I am showing that the problem can be corrected if you can be bothered.

Surely the hosting site itself could have tweaked the URL code in someway .

Since you are clearly unhappy with the service that you are currently receiving, I'm sure if you take your postimage purchase back to the point of sale you'll be entitled a full refund.

Alternatively, 30 seconds with google shows a number of results containing the text:
postimg.ORG domain is locked by Registry, no prior notice.
While we hope to resolve the issue, we chose postimg.CC as our new home.
Please update codes embedded in your websites.
which would suggest that this is a hopefully temporary problem that they are working on resolving/have already resolved.

Ultimately, if you are using a service that you are not paying for then you have absolutely no say over how that service is operated. Relying on that service to continue to operate in the manner that you are expecting, 24 hours a day 7 days a week until the end of time, would seem to me to be a questionable decision.

Carve monochromatic representations of your images into stone tablets and haul them to the mountain tops for all to see.

They will stand the test of time*, outliving all known life, and even the silicon-based life that computers will inevitably evolve into.

*could, please see terms and conditions RE acid rain and acts of God.

Dude, just pay for your own hosting, if some cheeky satire writers can do it at little to no effort you can too...

I do of course have my own web page although it intermittently seems to display code. Any other pics of mine are up there for as long as they happen to be up there. Nothing is permanent even us.

How about waiting to see if they get the domain back. It's not uncommon to have them temporarily remove if something nefarious has gotten in and is using it in ways it shouldn't be (Spam, botnet, other malware). If that's resolved, it'll go back to normal. Just a guess, but it's not an uncommon scenario.

If it turns out that it won't change back, why on earth would you change every post manually? It's perfectly possible to whip up a small script to change whatever.org to whatever.cc. Assuming it passes muster of a websites admin (Jane's tech support on here), then let it go. The whole point of computers is to automate tedious tasks that require repetition.
