Can anyone tell me if backdoor is accessible at the moment looking to go this Sunday. Thank you - also if someone could confirm the size of the 'key' that would be greatly appreciated

As far as I'm aware, at the time of posting, both Jacks and Back Door are open.
as for the "key" it is 17mm
Don't rely on getting one from the Quarryman's if you forget yours, as they no longer hand them out after an "incident" recently.

You could pick one up from one of the Mendip clubs but that means leaving the motorway.

Try Halfords or a motor factors or a specialist tool shop. You don't need the bent bar type key, as Cap'n Cris posted above, an attachment to a ratchet works fine. You can buy individual sockets for a couple of quid to fit a ratchet...

If you have socket set a 17mm Allen head sump plug socket will do nicely, all your local motor factors stock them.

M10 bolt and a pair of molegrips

Yes, an M10 bolt is 17mm across the flanges, isn't it.
A length of M10 threaded rod with two M10 nuts locked against each other at one end and the other end bent 90 degrees for a handle/lever might work too, but some people are a little overzealous on tightening it so then you will need something very sturdy...

I would be interested to hear if Back Door is OK as I am planning a trip there in a few weeks.

Access via Backdoor and Jack's is OK currently.

does anyone know what the incident down box mine was? a couple of my mates went down a few months ago and were greeted by 2 police men and a dog after they banged on one of the red doors and were escorted out of that area of the mine. just curious whether the recent incident was because of someone seriously attempting to breach the red doors or just that someone had a bad fall and why it was bad enough for the quarrymans to stop giving out the key.

A gang of about 7 got lost in the c lift works area and started shouting out of the door on the a4
Eventually a local from another forum was contacted and escorted them out via backdoor
I take it u mean mod plod at the red door at the end of the slender forest as normal plod of fire won't go in for insurance purposes
They must of been literally behind the door when they knocked as they normally wouldn't respond to it unless the door was being forced and set of the sensor alarm on the other side

I heard another group needed to be rescued and one of the members of the group sprained their ankle and are now looking for damages from all parties, eg the land owner, Hanson and the quarrymans arms for supplying the key, which is why they've stopped.

Really?, That's not going to be helpful!

Chris.
