Another Giant's thread

This time, not about pulling people out!!

Had a pootle around yesterday looking at a few of the side passages. There are fixed ropes everywhere, mostly going up to heights unknown off anchors of unknowable crappiness. The Ghost Rift rope&rigging seemed fine. We didn't go up any of the others 'cos I'm soft & a bit nervy. Anyone been up any of the other fixed ropes recently? Particularly, Chert Hall looked interesting. The Carnival Aven rope/anchors looked pretty sketchy so I bloused it!

By the way - can we put one of those counters they have on building sites in at the top of Garland's? You know, 9 days since the last accident at this site.

You great big jess
Seem to recall I got sent up the rope in Water Icicle, the one that was held by the krab which disintegrated when the next person up there touched it

You can get to Carnival Aven from above, if you take the high level passage on the right just before Geology. Then, if you dig down in the mud, you can even re-rig it!! :) :)

Hmmm. I took the high level passage on the right at the left-hand bend immediately before Geology. Followed it about 5-10m and someone nicked the floor. 2 dubious-looking ropes hung off old angle iron hangers went across Geology from there and - it looked like - up. I assume that is Carnival? Wasn't **that** up muddy there, but didn't much fancy the ropes given the location. Or is there another way that gets you even higher? :?

Seem to recall you were the one running up the rope, yes - don't recall any comment on the anchors and IIRC I followed you up. Anyway, I'm a firm believer in learning from mistakes. Preferably other people's :p

Ropes going nowhere ? well ! each rope is the for the purpose of exploration, A Giants trip to the many is to the bottom and out in the quickest time i.e Entrance, garlands, crabwalk, eating house, geology, far curtain, east canal sump then out. But for the few who have carried out explorations over many years (and it does take years) there is more to giants than most folk even think about. insted of wearing blinkers the next time you go into any cave consider, is there anymore to this place ?then maybe one day we all may have more of the subterainian underworld to visit.
Who knows what u may find

Couldn't agree more, T-Pot! Wasn't accusing ropes of going 'nowhere' so much as 'where???'. Or, more precisely, 'since when?' Certainly want to get to know Giant's better, as you say there's lots of bits to do that most people don't & clearly a fair bit left to find - but equally didn't fancy going out across the head of Geology on a possibly very old rope off unknown anchors - should think some on DCRO are getting bored of Giant's.

Has anyone been to the choke at the end of the passage at the top of ghost rift in the last couple of years, just wondered if any one has managed to get through into the earth leakage trip,
This was a big chamber we discovered a few years ago, howling draught, hanging death, walking size passage going off, ended at a pitch in the floor which needed clearing at the top
