Cavers name discovery after favourite beer
Published Date: 04 June 2009
WHEN group of local cavers made their latest underground discovery near Castleton, they decided to name it after their favourite beer.
So the chamber is being called Absolution after one of the products of Abbeydale Brewery in Sheffield.
The cavers, including Rob Eavis, Katie Dent and Robbie Shone, meet regularly at The Red Lion at Litton after a hard day underground to relax and enjoy a pint of cask ale.
They were part of the group who dug into the famous Titan, the largest single pitch cave in UK, in Castleton in 2004. Earlier this year they discovered a whole series of new passages, including a chamber described by Rob Eavis as "overflowing with ancient formations, glistening pale and beautiful".
And that, they said, brought to mind their favourite pint.
To celebrate the honour, Abbeydale has launched a limited edition Absolution with a pump clip featuring a photo of the newly discovered cave. This Friday, there will be a special Absolution Night at the Red Lion with a chance to meet the brewers, sample the beer and see an exhibition of photos of the new discovery by Robbie Shone.
Sue Morton, of Abbeydale, said "We are delighted to have such an exciting discovery named after one of our beers!"
