THE CAVES AND MINES OF ANGLESEY by Tony Oldham  September 2006 ix + 57 pp,  illus,  surveys, 3 pages of colour photos.  Anglesey is overshadowed by the great Parys Mountain copper mine.  This book describes many of the smaller mines including the long forgotten coal mines at Berw.  Usual gazetteer style: name, ngr description and references.  SB £7.50 + £1.30 postage.

A recent review

Tony Oldham's book clearly show what a persistent and dedicated investigator can achieve by locating a diversity of documents and by studying these intensively and imaginatively, coupled with the available field evidence.

The work provides an excellent reference source on the mines and caves, together with the geology, history, industrial archaeology, transport and social life of the area.

In marshalling such information, the great proportion of which is publish for the first time, in a professional way in both the text and in a many excellent surveys, the author has provided both local and general historians with an indispensable too.  It provides, for the first time as far as the caves of Anglesey are concerned, a detailed blueprint against which the more general studies can be assessed.

It will also provide local readers, and I speak as one who was born in Llangefni into a farming family who took a fascinating interest in their industrial heritage.

Because of the successful and attractive way in which the information is presented and cross-referenced, it should prove of value to anyone interested in the history of Anglesey.
