Jenni Mills's debut novel is an offbeat (sometimes as in surprising; occasionally as in without rhythm) psychological thriller, set around the mineshafts sprawling under Bath. A female engineer, Kit Farry, has been given the task of filling the unstable mines in, but realises that an Ancient Roman temple to Mithras may exist in the far reaches of the tunnels. Keeping it a secret, she explores the creepy apertures with her caver friend, even though she?s scared of being underground.

Much of the story is told in flashback, and explores the bad time Kit had with her parents, her crush on a man called Gary Bennett and her adventures with dodgy friends at wild parties ? all of which she wants to forget. Then Bennett crops up in the present as her site foreman and her past threatens to catch up with her.

It?s all slickly told and gripping in an Indiana Jones type of way ? not necessarily the best combination if you're looking for magical writing, but who said books were about that anymore? If Haruki Murakami started writing now it wouldn't be long before some creative writing tutor, agent or editor snipped all the good bits out.
