Bat book for almost half price

Could Big Jim or one of other resident Bat experts comment...

Is this the standard reference guide for Bats and so a bargain?

(I'm prepared to pay the money if its the bat equivalent of the Collins Bird Guide but not if its a duff coffee table book...or an obscure scientific treatise of interest only to expert bat-o-philes)

At the risk of being awarded the pedants award for today -

The thread title is misleading. "Almost half price" would be just less than ?22.50
?26.99 is, in fact, a little over half price

Hmm. Not sure i agree there.

If it was ?20 it would be less than half price.

If it was ?22.50 it would be half price.

So ?26.99 must be almost half price.

For those of you who can't be bothered to scroll down to the bottom of the Natural History Book Shop page ......

"This comprehensive and superbly illustrated handbook presents for the first time all 51 bat species that occur across Europe and Northwest Africa, taking in to account recent taxonomic advances and new species descriptions from over the last few years. The discovery of new species in Europe, after a century of intensive investigations, indicates the limits of our knowledge and how far we are from a comprehensive understanding of bat ecology, biology, behaviour and biogeography. It was this need, especially as it affected conservation in the light of habitat loss and fragmentation, that motivated the authors of this landmark work.

The aim has been both to inspire a wide readership and to make the book exciting for specialists. Extensive introductory chapters reveal the remarkable biology of bats and explore the latest findings in bat evolution and echolocation. The in-depth species accounts cover life history, conservation status and identification, and are accompanied by the fine photography of Dietmar Nill.

The book was first published in German in 2007. For this English edition a number of corrections and updates have been incorporated and there is additional information on species occurring in the UK. A table reflects the latest IUCN conservation status assessments for species, including 5 extra species which are briefly discussed in the species accounts."

"There's no denying that this is an outstanding, if not indispensable, book. It's a pleasure to browse and will be my standard reference for years to come."
- BBC Wildlife (January 2010)

"This exemplary handbook opens up the night-time world and places bats in their ecological context ? buy it and find yourself hooked immediately."
- Bird Watching (January 2010)

"Would make a superb addition to the library of any amateur bat enthusiast"
- Birding World

If you embark on a 45 mile journey, 21 miles would be almost half way. 27 miles would be somewhat more than half way.

"Almost 50% off" or "reduced by almost half" would be accurate. "Almost half price" is something we've grown to accept through lazy marketing but it is not true in most cases.

At the risk of derailing this thread, 50% off is half price. Yes?

Therefore "Almost 50% off" must be the same as "Almost half price"

The first statement doesn't imply the second.

To say X is almost Y means that X lies between 0 and Y but is much closer to the latter. Unless Y is negative ('It's almost minus ten degrees') then Y > X.

If one said that the price was almost halved, that'd be fine.

Clearly issues like these are amongst the most important facing modern british caving!
