I recently heard of the sad departure from this World of John. who died two weeks ago on January the 3rd.

John will be known to thousands of cavers and others who frequent the Cavers meeting place, The Helwith Bridge Inn.

Ive known John for almost five decades and we have enjoyed many a conversation, I will miss him.

Im not sure if he was a founder member of one of Britains greatest caving clubs, the Yorkshire Subtterranean Society, he has certainly been at the helm with Colin Grey and Alan Speight  for most of its existance, helping steer it through the years.

Including the creating and ongoing developement of the world class  YSS HQ ....The "Old School" Hostel used by cavers and others from all over the world..
.... a tremendous legacy to this and future generations of Cave Explorers and appreciators of the beauty of the Three Peaks region...

So for a great life shared...
Thank You Johnie.....

Richard.

I do not know how I forgot, when recalling about Johnie being for many years at the helm of the Yorkshire Subterranean Society with  Alan and Colin, I should also have included the indefatigable Trevor Tordoff .........

That's really sad news Richard. I remember him well from my YSS days in the 80s and 90s. RIP.

I was at the funeral last week over at Pontefract Crematorium, the lady attending the flowers asked me if it was a celebrity who had passed away, never seen so many people attending a funeral there.
Eulogy from Colin Gray and Trevor Tordoff were a touching tribute to a much admired man.
