i have no objection to trying ropes to cars , been there done that  - but the steering wheel ???????????????  FFS use the tow points

Nah.  If you fasten the rope to somewhere like the chassis or the towing bracket, a thief might drive off without noticing, and leave you down the hole without a rope.

If you tie it to the steering wheel, they're bound to see it: then they'll probably untie it and toss it down the hole to you before they drive off.

I remember I was once down Stream Entrance in GG coming up when I met two Polish cavers who were caving whilst working her for a few months.  They had all brand new kit,clothing, srt, rope everything bought for the occasion.  The one who could speak English said it was to feel safe on the airy7 Yorkshire ground holes, then his mate rigged the second pitch with one fig 8, dropped his rope down and set off!  Queue lots of fast talking Polish, he zoomed back up and they then re rigged it to match identically the CPC rope that was already there!

I've always wondered if I hadn't been there would they have changed it.
