Forum Names

Perhaps already discussed but it seems most of us hide behind a forum name. If the personal profile gave the option of including a real name I wonder how many people would use it. Maybe most feel that anonymity gives freedom to express oneself in a more forthright way. Personally I don't give a toss who knows my real name which is er ummm . Oh the telephone is ringing ------ :-\

Well, I'm Tony, and I do come from Suffolk. Actually, that's not quite accurate, I'm originally from Kingston-Upon-Thames. I did spend time living in Chelmsford and Kent...heavens, is that the time...

No, I wouldn't, but that's because of employment clauses, not anonymity. I'll say anything I say on here to someones face without a problem.

Having an online nick/tag/handle is just part of being online. Not using your name doesn't mean you are hiding something, or hiding behind it. Hell, I've had one nick since my BBS days which is well over 2 decades ago.

Thinking myself a 'normal' human being it came as a shock about 11 years ago to find I have a seriouse genetic disease - ochronosis alkaptonuria - get it?

It also explains the email address - aku.sucks at googlemail.com

And besides most know who I am anyway, so I don't exactly hide.

Leclused

No secrets here neither; My nickname (Leclused) is just my family name "l'Ecluse" followed by the first letter of my name "Dagobert". I even place my full name in my singature

I find it a matter of politeness to sign a comment with your real name. But that is off course my opinion.

For a while I was referred to as "Longshanks"  (I am 6'4" with an athletic  build) by a friend, but that didn't stick once I moved "up North" and rebooted my life...

I sometimes get called Chas now, but that is just a hypocorism or  diminutive form of Charles really

The only real nick-name that I used over the years is "Pegasus", but that was already in use by someone whose real name I do know (though I don't actually know her), so I simply plumped for my old O2 email account name which is my family (surname) Cooley plus my first initials C & R....

Should I change it? Don't know really, seems little point...

I've been using 'pwhole' for everything online for over 15 years now, including my domain, and so far, no-one has kicked down my door, or made any assassination attempts.

I use my real name mainly because, if I don't want something that I say to be associated with me, then I won't say it. I'm sure that I'll say the odd thing in hast, anger, or jest that I'll look back on and regret, but that's life isn't it - you live and you learn.

I've said some clatteringly idiotic things, but it's all on record.
Including when I was going to sign upto the Credit crunch expo 7 or so years ago and asked some stupid questions.
I think there were also a series of posts about cave animals as well, those were the (early) Hyper days...
I might have also bought a wetsuit from Chapman, which was far too small for me :s

Goydenman

I use Goydenman cos I'm the butt of jokes that I have to get a visa to get out of Nidderdale and visit anywhere else!!!
With little effort people find out my birth name

A wetsuit that is too small for the Gottzone - I find it hard to believe they can be manufactured that small

Some people here know who I am.  I've had card details etc. nicked before so if/when this site or host gets hacked not many (if any) personal details will get harvested and used to be linked to other harvested data from other sources.
Anyway when not consuming Marie Antoinette's appeasement to the people (cake) as a member of the undead I'm actually Batman, or is it Spartacus, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I forget...

On the " Draenen clear-up (split from Cave Conservation Rewards)" thread on 19 October, NigR mentioned a Rob Jones, who was formerly on the Cambrian Caving Council Executive.

For the prevention of possible confusion, there is more than one caver of this name and I am not the person referred to in NigR's post.

Jones is the most commonplace Welsh surname - one in eight of the population of Wales shared this surname and in some parts of Wales over 30% of the population shared this surname. In my generation Robert was a very popular name. At school there were two other boys with these names in a class of thirty and I have encountered many others subsequently. 'John Smith' would be distinctive in comparison...  ::)

I just thought it was the thing to do so used my moniker from doctors net. It is a bit of date considering that a) I am retired and b) MRO is now known as MCR.  I was once a medical warden for the MRO and at a pinch would turn up toa rescue  if deemed useful. Some people seem to think I must be Irish but if I changed to Mcrdoc no doubt you would think I was Scottish.

I feel I have to once more mention the incongruity of seeing a member of the medical profession about to take a toke of a giant spliff...
