Where is it?

The first part of the tekst translated gives the following (thank you google translate)

The cave named after Verevkin is 2151 m deep!

In the period from July 30 to August 14 (the deadline for underground work), another expedition of the speleoclub Perovo took place in the cave named after Verevkin. As a result of the expedition, the depth of the cave increased to 2151 m. Thus, the cave becomes the second super deep (deeper than 2 km) and deepest, accessible without underwater equipment.

Full report google translated.  Great effort and more leads at the bottom by the sounds of it

"The cave named after Verevkin is 2151 m deep!

The lower point is currently in the system of subhorizontal spacious courses in the area from -2100 m to -2150 m, this is a mirror of one of the siphons. The absolute elevation is 129 m above sea level. On the main watercourse it is possible to reach unflooded areas deeper than this mark. For this expedition, the working time was not enough, stopped at -2129 m before the next ledge (8 m).
By the previously known three siphons in a cave Add another 4. One of them is the main watercourse (-1963 m), was found by his rounds. Three more - in the subhorizontal system below -2100 m: mirrors at 2115 m, 2140 m and 2151 m. All of them are spacious, the dimensions of the course are more than 4 m, standing water.
In addition, during the expedition the telephone communication was organized from -600 m to -1350 m, work was carried out on the passage of the upper entrances to Vimevkin. In addition to existing scripting PBL 1900 also search for promising caves in the valley ?4 Triangle area (on the opposite side of Castle). Cave Blue Wing was passed to -87 m.
Effective and accident-free operation of the expedition was made possible thanks to the well-coordinated efforts of 21 participants. To solve the expedition tasks, 16 people reached the mark of -1 km, of which 8 to -1800 m and from these 8 half to the deepest point.

Where does this leave the rather hyped up race to the bottom as described in the book 'Blind Descent' by James Tabor. Are the Russians unbeatable now or do the Mexicans still have a chance?

Huautla in Mexico was apparently in 8th place, about half a kilometre behind Krubera-Voronja at end of last year, with Verevkin 21st then at 1354m, so they have gained almost 800m! Both 2000m+ caves are in the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia.

(List seems more up to date than wikipedia & Huautla is 15m deeper than Jason Mallinson reported in 2013 -

Doesn't look as though the Mexicans have much chance of catching up as the Russians still haven't reached the water table:

I think Cheve has a higher depth potential than Huautla

Frankly you diggers need to pull your fingers out and get digging. I want to see OFD and / or something on Leck Fell in the top 5 by this time next year. Get cracking.  :tease:

Your question has still not been answered. Referring back to the Perovo club's 2013 forum entry, Verevkin (or should it be Veryovkin? There are 2 spellings) is in the Republic of Abkhazia, on the Arabika Massif.

I did mention the Caucasus a couple of posts ago - 5 of the top 10 are now in Abkhazia. Krubera-Voronja is also in the Arabika Massif. Abkhazia is only recognised as a republic mainly by Russia, whilst Georgia & the United Nations consider it to be part of Georgia.

Spelling depends how you translate the Russian, Verevkina is the equivalent of letters they use.

For a taste of Abkhazian culture I recommend a CD I often play in the car in the early hours of the morning during trips from Kent to digs in the Blaenavon area:

Abkhazian Music
Label: ??????? ?? MEL CD 30 01643
Series: Spirit Of Folk ? , Antholgy Of Folk Music ?
Format: CD, Album, Compilation
Released: 17 May 2010

There is a Channel 4 series on at the moment - Levison Wood walking the Caucasus. I did wonder if he'd be going through Abkhazia, where the deep caves are but it looks like he's travelling on the Northern side of the mountains mostly. Interesting first episode anyway.

Let me know when you're down my way next Graigwen, I'd like to finally meet up. Maybe I could even give you're interesting CD collection a listen!

Some people are probably aware of this, but I've not seen a mention of this on UKCaving yet, so for anyone not yet informed:

Veryovkina is now -2204m deep, and therefore the deepest explored cave in the world, 7m deeper than Krubera.

There doesn't seem to have been a formal announcement to this effect, but there's a few scraps of info about the web, most notably on Bob Gulden's webpage.

This updates the story with last summer's exploration to below 2,200 metres.
