A bit of Mendip cave history

I was at Sidmouth Folk Festival today and at a leather store got chatting to the ownee Spike Cadman. He told me that he did some digging in Swildons as a Scout and remembers being involved in opening up Barnes Loop. I think from his description he met St. Paul's series. Anybody remember him? He also tells me that on another occasion he and a group of others used something like chimney sweeps poles to go fishing in the Upper Traverse in Eastwater Cavern. It has always been knows as a kit swallower and apparently their fishing trip was very successful. Anybody else done this?

I know Tony Jarrett used to fish for kit that'd fallen down the Upper Traverse. I once dropped an ammo tin down there (embarrassingly shortly after lecturing the group I was taking down Eastwater on the hazards of so doing...) which contained a cheap camera and a Marathon bar. Never did get it back. Selfishly, a friend point-blank refused to send his three-year-old daughter down there to retrieve it.
