Goatchurch Cavern: base of midgets' steps... trench forming!

Today (14th April 2006) I was surprised to discover that the floor at the very base of the migets' steps in Goatchurch Cavern has begun to erode away and a noticeable hole/trench is developing at the top of the rift leading into the boulder maze. When it rains, water entering via Back Door/Tradesman's Entrance flows down the midgets' steps and trickles down here so perhaps this is the cause of the change. It seems apparent that this hole/trench will enlarge over time.

This post is therefore to point out that there is a hole/trench developing where previously one expected to find a reliable path!

Which just goes to show that new hazards to trap the unwary (or inexperienced) can appear in even the most familiar of places.

Hmmm,.... had a good look at it again today and took some photos. The "ground" is just compacted gravels/stones with mud and it looks distinctly like it's all going to end up breaking away, creating a new feature.

I shall check again after a bit more rain has washed through this bit of the cave!.....
