Looking for an active club

I have some limited experience of caving in the mendips, but have been climbing for 15 years. Very comfortable with ropes and understand the principles of SRT. Also very interested in diving and sumps. Looking for an active and friendly club to get involved with over the next 6 months. Happy to assist in any projects that need an extra pair of hands (above and below ground). Anyone got any opportunities?

Might be worth mentioning which part of the country you are living in.

If it's the Mendip try contacting the Wessex.

I live near high wycome, but am planning to travel and wild camp for a while so location is unimportant. My understanding is the mendip groups are not as active as i am looking for currently.

Im happy to assist in any project. Be it sump clearing, gear mule, jam boy or bunk house renovating im game. I hope in return to have a good time down a few holes and learn more about SRT and other techniques.

Wild camping and caving is an interesting combination. After a hard days caving (wet and dirty), you have to be proper hardcore to then wildcamp!

Many Mendip cavers are very active, it's probably just the ones you knew 15 years ago that aren't!

I was at the Wessex HQ yesterday morning. There were 2 groups in Swildon's Hole and 1 in Eastwater Cavern. The cavers were from a mixture of clubs.

Although not a member at the moment (simply because I rarely get to Mendip due to caving in the north mainly) I was, for many years. I can vouch for the Wessex as an excellent club. It also has the benefit of a good hostel which, if you decide to use it, would save sorting out all that camping gear. WCC members are very active on Mendip, in other British caving areas and are involved in overseas expedition caving.

Having recently joined the Gloucester Speleological Society, I've been very impressed with how many active projects there are, as well as trips running in the area and further afield.

Personally, I've only involved myself in one such project (the reason I joined) and I'm yet to join a social or sporting trip with them, but they certainly seem a very active club based on the trip schedule and the frequent updates from various projects.

You?re understanding is quite wrong. Definitely get in touch with the Wessex - I believe there is a club trip on 9/10 that I am sure you?d be more than welcome to join.

I?m a Wessex member and was caving last weekend, Fri to Sun, including diving and plenty of ropey stuff, and I know plenty of other Mendip club members were out and about.

I?m nr Watford so not a million miles from where you?re based - I try and get out at least twice a month. The Peak District is also good for a day trip when time is tight.

Plenty of trips and things taking place in Wales and the grim north too.

But for now I?d definitely say join the WCC, meet some people and take it from there.

On the subject of the GSS, a friend has recently joined them and I?ve heard positive things.

If you?re in High Wycombe and interested in the social side the Westminster SG (www.wsg.org.uk) has started meeting again in central London (although admittedly it?s the opposite direction?but not too far!). There is usually a regular weekend convoy heading along the M4 to S.Wales or Mendip and you won?t struggle to find a friendly offer of a lift.
