Dear Friends,

Sinkholes have been in the news a lot recently and were featured this week on National Public Radio (NPR).

On Wednesday, the Diane Rehm show had a 50-minute segment on the topic, featuring Randy Orndorff of the U.S. Geological Survey, a past NCKRI board member. Listen to the show by going to http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-03-20/science-sinkholes.

Yesterday, NCKRI?s hydrogeologist, Dr. Lewis Land, was interviewed on NPR?s Talk of the Nation. You can hear that 17-minute interview at http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=5&prgDate=3-21-2013 after a 1-minute news summary. Lewis? interview includes discussion of the upcoming Sinkhole Conference.

Both interviews are excellent summaries of the topic and the science involving them. As a reminder, NCKRI is hosting the 13th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst (aka, The Sinkhole Conference) on 6-10 May 2013 at NCKRI Headquarters in Carlsbad. It?s a tremendous opportunity to learn about how sinkholes form and to learn the latest and greatest engineering and geological science to prevent and remediate them. For more information about this international event, and to register for the conference and its field trips and short courses, visit https://sites.google.com/site/sinkholeconference2013/.
