There are actually 662 entries in the database but I don't believe for one minute that it is complete.  :-\

CSCC Access page database for Mendip caves has 142. I never realised Devon had so much to offer. Must go and visit some more stuff down there soon.

Worth doing?

This is a matter of personal perspective, how do you define "worth doing"  :-\

If you mean caves of a significant length or with a degree of sporting challenge then there are about seven (which is not actually many less than Mendip)

The longest cave in Devon is Bakers Pit which has a total length of 3.5km, a 15m(ish) entrance shaft, large chambers, small streamway, well decorated and a through trip (not permitted as it exits into a private gas store though)

Reeds Cavern is also part of this system but the connection has been blocked due to them damned furry flying meeces.
Visits are permitted to Reeds in the summer months.

Pridhamsleigh Cavern is a cracking cave with something for everyone, especially mud but also lots of interconnecting chambers, deep pools, water  and the (in)famous lake at the end. Dog Hole is almost certainly a part of this system but with no known connection at the moment. It is however very pretty in the extensions (which are gated to protect them - key readily available).

Afton Red Rift - does exactly what it says on the tin, Afton Red Rift is a superb, sporting round trip with chambers, crawls, climbs, squeezes, traverses and some of the finest spiders you are ever likely to see

Radford cave is another fine round trip with some large chambers, prettied, climbs and crawls. Not sure what the access is here at the moment though.  :(

Bunkers is very pretty and gated with a leader system although the cave is short it is well worth doing - take a camera!

I am reliably informed that Cliffords Cave is worthy of a visit as well but I have not personally been there.  :-\

Coombsend Chasm is a good trip too although quite short.

There are various caves at Berry Head Quarry but most are gated and access is controlled.  :(

Penrecca mine is worthy of a visit as well. This slate mine has a through trip with a 30m shaft and a few side passages to explore

Enough to keep you busy for the weekend I reckon ;) ;) ;)

As does the latest edition, as does Willie Stanton's Complete Caves of Mendip but then many cavers are interested in things like choked sinks and unexplored risings.

Not as much as Whielackington

Perhaps he will go to Devon and not come back till he's dyetraced all 662 caves to their resurgences.  o_O Then he can ask The Devon and Cornwall Underground Council to explain how none DCUC people can start a dig in/on DCUC controlled sites   :chair: ( all in secret of course), he might even "Hit Water" when he (or more probably his oiks) drops a shaft to minus 100 metres,   :tease: then pump it dry with a windmill he picked up in his Volvo when he was in the Netherlands. :spank:

It is no good folks, you will have to buy the book if you want caves descriptions.

HE CONCISE CAVES OF DEVON by A D Oldham, J E A Oldham and J Smart. 1986 revised January 1991, with a note by Jack Baer 02 December 2002.  ii + 62 pp + [2] + 12  +[2] pp supplements, including the Complete Caves of Devon [list of caves by NGR].  40 surveys, 7 maps, 5 photos, with summaries in English, French and German.  The long out of print "Limestones and Caves of Devon" was criticised as being too verbose and of little interest to the sporting caver.  This present volume attempts to over-come these failings by omitting both references and all caves which are filled in or quarried away.  This new revised edition is both 1/3 the price and 1/2 number of pages than its predecessor, even so over 270 caves are described, many with surveys.  Essential reading for anyone considering caving in Devon.    SB  £10.00

The Registry only gives name, NGR and Length.

Graham makes a very important point which the "too verbose" comments about Oldham's book fails to detect - non-sports-cavers are interested in caves with potential (remember that quaint pastime, digging?) and in these modern times where much of the countryside is turning to bramgle (cross between jungle and brambles, hawthorn et al; my own made-up word BTW - crap, innit?) the sites of "little interest to the sporting caver", if not already "lost", are at risk of being temporarily lost in impenetrable thickets. With something of a rennaisance in Mendip digging happening RIGHT NOW many of these lesser sites could become the focus of attention. To ignore sites which no-one visits "because they're not worth bothering with" would be a sad mindset to get into since where would the new discoveries come from if people "didn't bother"?.... I think a COMPREHENSIVE book of sites for any region is an essential publication at least once every 25 years or so - also, given we are now approaching 2007 I think it's reasonable to expect downloadable GPS data on accompanying DVD and photographs of entrances to aid identification. Bill Chadwick's superb mapping of Mendip sets a remarkable example of what is possible.

Tony Oldham's Caves of Devon was based on a list Pete Rose Nick Chipchase and myself cooked up in the 60's but never published as the DSS didn't like the idea. Tony included some spoof sites in the second edition such as Lafrowda Pot (Exeter Uni's drains) and the public toilets in Buckfastleigh.

The best and most authoritative guide to Devon caves was published by Chris Proctor about 20 years ago - now out of print. Chris also didn't get round to covering all the regions in Devon but he was pretty thorough in listing all sites of speleological interest rather than open cave. Since then we have found new open cave. Cookie will remember being stuffed into it I expect!

Since then we have been back again and "surveyed" it (about 6 body lengths long)  We were going to write it up as a major Devon discovery but couldn't be bothered ;)
