Irritating noise with LED upgrade on Petzl Duo

Has anyone noticed a high-pitched or a hissing noise with the LED upgrade for the halogen bulb in the Petzl Duo?

It is something I have noticed, especially when solo caving when everything is ultra quiet.

If you turn the switch slightly, the noise can go, but sometimes it doesn't.

If anybody has noticed this with the LED upgrade, please let me know - otherwise I will be thinking it is my usual perennial bad luck when buying new things.

It may be emitted by the oscillation of a circuit component - a lot of those digital watches that light up blue do the same thing and it is normal in those cases...

I had the same with my duo upgrade. Using the zoom it changed the tone. After a few months it was gone.

Last month I was checking my lamp and noticed that the mirror was slightly damaged, probably by the heat. Perhaps the heat-interaction of the Led with the mirror caused the sound in the beginning.

I would say check your mirror around the Led Socket and perhaps shave it a bit to avoid contact and heat damage and perhaps the sound will dissappear too

Do you have a link to the manufacturer or the shop where you got this LED replacement? (I assume it's not Petzl, because their LED insert are for the small bulb, not the halogen). I'm quite sure that it is noise from any inductive components in the switching circuits.

It does exist from Petzl it is article : E61700 (see pdf also) http://en.petzl.com/ProduitsServices/spare-parts-08.pdf

however it can be ordered from severel different suppliers: see the following topic on nss caving forum

http://www.forums.caves.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6203

I'm currently using the one from terralux (which I think is the same that petzl is offering, not 100% sure)

Price : I paid around 22 euro (a year ago)

Reamark : the led replacement can in some case not work on older duo's

I get the same high pitch buzzing from my duo halogen/led upgrade.
Don't use it much except for avens etc.
Have actually found it handy on a couple of occaisions when I found I'd caught the switch and was on the spot beam rather than the multi-led array. Suspect batteries would have run down quicker if I'd not noticed and changed it back again.

Led replacement bulbs that allow for a wide range of battery voltages have inductive components in them that will whine, its normal. the ones for specific voltages / number of cells just use a resistor and won't whine. putting pressure on the led may well change the tone or stop it.
No its not your perenial bad luck. ;)
