small hangers for surveying

In quite a few caves & mines there seem to be some small hangers in the roof for surveying. They appear to be a push fit in a small (ca 5mm hole) and have a small eye at the bottom to attach a tag or target for laser surveying. I have so far failed to find a name or source using google and a variety of  plausible terms. Can someone enlighten me as to what they are called or even better a reasonably priced source...

Cheers,
Dave

The technical term for these hangers is Spad, not so much mining here in UK so you may have to get some from US.

York Survey Supply offer a number of Brass Survey Markers.

Alternatively you can drill a hole and leave it as is or stick something in it to help find it again.
Plastic Cow Tags have been used, pushed into a drilled hole.

Geocke do an extensive range of surveying markers and tools including some specialist tunneling stuff

If you are going to use a metal marker, consider the implications for your Magnetic Compass or DistoX.

I can post you a couple of those to play with if you'd like to PM me your address.

Nick.

Thanks for your kind offer Nick,  however the local toolstation is only 2 miles away and at 97p for 10 its not going to break the bank!

Cheers,
Dave

The plastic ones are probably better, for 2 reasons:

  • Do not interfere with the compass, so your survey will be correct
  • Are removable, and will not rust; the metal ones are hard to get out, you at least need tools, and at they rust that is hardly the choice of anyone that is conservation minded

Sorry - didn't see those plastic ones - spot on them  (y)

We've used red rawl plugs as survey station markers, small enough to not notice, obvious enough if you know what your looking for in the right area. Only used on main points in the survey, obvious junctions etc.

I use those plastic cable ties when taping - at the ends of tape runs. To mark permanent survey stations I've used 6mm stainless steel (non-magnetic) coach bolts in a 5.5 mm hole - self tapping in limestone, and not easily removed without a spanner. They don't rust, and labels can be tied to them.

To mark permanent stations I use Scotch reflective tape, punch a hole in a short length and push the plastic cable tie mount through  and into the drilled hole. The station name is marked on the tape with a permanent marker.
