North York Moors Jet Mines

Really great pre-Chrismas meal trip to the jet mines in the North York Moors. A very complex network of small and fragile tunnels dug into shale which has been recently surveyed by North York Moors CC and York CC members. The jet is compressed monkey puzzle tree found in 'logs' in the shale. Pretty much all of the jet has gone but some small bits can still be found in the spoil. Considering the age and "rock" type, the tunnels are in remarkable condition.

A very easy place to get lost! There are several kilometers of passage in a grid connected with three, four and five way junctions which all look the same.

After a few hours underground for our rather large group, we headed off to the Crown and Hutton-le-Hole for an excellent three course meal and plenty of beer.
