Graffiti in Katnot

A couple of us had a bimble into Katnot today and were disappointed to see some new graffiti in the first chamber. G Friel and CF apparently needed to let everyone know that they visited in 2018. Luckily it was only daubed in mud, so a few wellyfuls of water got rid of it.

It did make us wonder though if they had done the same as the intrepid bar pot graffiti artists, ie come across older graffiti and thought that it was the done thing to add their names to the collection. Much as I hate the idea of putting signs up in caves, what do people think about the idea of an information board similar to the one at GG?

We believe that the Bradford Pothole Club undertook some graffiti removal in Katnot about three years ago, so a bit of a shame to hear about it reappearing. Was there any other graffiti obvious or was this the first to appear since the cleanup?

We'd like to think it is just a lack of understanding of cave conservation rather than any kind of wanton vandalism.

Thank you for taking the initiative to clean this up

The other graffiti was very faded and much higher up the walls, so probably from a much earlier time. I didn't see any more, other than the ones we removed. There were three areas at eye level and one where someone had climbed up the rock to write near to the old graffiti, which made us wonder if they saw it as adding their names to the list.
