National Association of Mining History Organisations annual field meet and conference 2019

This is to be hosted by Cambrian Mines Trust in association with Dr Peter Claughton as lecture program organiser.
Cave Access Ltd will be providing access to mines on land owned by the Welsh Government.

The venue is Llanafan which is close to Cymystwyth and Frongoch, and a short distance only from most field trips. Longest is Talybont at 17 miles. Aberystwyth is 10.
Camping, halls, etc all within a few minutes of each other.

See: http://www.cambrianmines.co.uk/NAMHO_2019/index.html

Full details on above website which is constantly updated. Bookings will be by the NAMHO booking website which will be linked to the above. A dedicated domain has been registered NAMHO2019.uk but we are unable to use it because the 'service' provider is updating its system, regardless of the fact that the old system worked OK, the new one does not and has been like it for weeks. Its easily.uk, at the moment unfit for purpose.

Cavers will be very welcome as I want to draw in some new young people to the mining history and exploration community.

BCA does web hosting. See http://british-caving.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=pricing

The domain has been registered but I cannot 'point' it, or transfer it to another DNS. The hosting is working fine, all websites up and running.

I looked at some reviews. Yup, they are going down the plug hole. (https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.easily.co.uk)

I can't help you but you might find this helpful. Because it is a .uk domain you can bypass Easily and transfer the domain to another registrar via Nominet. It'll cost a ?10 or so.

I have just been reading the postings on this via the link and the last was interesting as in the main it dealt with the mans loss of email. I had the same this and was without for 4 days. Then I studied the emails received from easily and discovered that I needed to do something, I think register on the new portal under existing username but with a new password or similar. Once I did this all was restored.

The thing to remember is that there are always two sides to everything. I have some knowledge of IT matters, but there must be many others using easily who do not and and as such are a complete burden to technical support. I find the new portal OK once you get used to it, and apart from the new domain, which I registered on the old website because I could not on the new, things are not too bad.

Odd thing is the auto renew. One was renewed for 1 year and me charged for 2, another simultaneously renewed for 2 and charged for one. This translates as stressed out people trying to cope with migration issues manually. Throw in a load of "what is SMTP" type inquiries and you will have the chaos we are seeing.

The help on there is US and descriptions bear no relation to what is there on screen, it is in truth bad. Why on earth they had to change something that was working well I cannot imagine.

At this point in time I feel moving everything more trouble than its worth, and as everything now seems OK except above domain, and nothing else due to renew until next year, I will bide my time.

http://www.namho2019.uk/ is up and running.

I did some checking and found that the domain was registered but still on the old system DNS. After a bit of thought I managed to hack into my account on the old system and point the domain. So now all is running OK.

Problems I had with easily have all been sorted, by me without their help. I had to change the settings on my email client (Desktop Outlook) to receive my emails, and change the destination upload folder in my FTP client (MS Expression Web) as its different on the new system and would have probably lead to two instances of my websites.

I wonder about how much some of the IT professions who cannot use the easily service at all actually know about IT.

NAMHO Conference 2019 - Call for papers

The conference will be hosted by the Cambrian Mines Trust and held at Llanafan, Ceredigion, Mid-Wales (based on the Lisburne Hall) - over the long weekend (Thursday through to Monday) 4-8th July 2019.

The theme for the lecture programme is -

Mine exploration as a research tool - applications in mining history, geology and archaeology

Mine exploration, using speleological techniques, takes the researcher into a new and potentially rewarding aspect of mining history and archaeology. It also provides a very different view of the geology and mineralogy to that seen at surface.

The lecture programme at NAMHO 2019 seeks to provide an insight into the research potential for mine exploration and those who use their speleological / caving skills to access abandoned mines.

Offers of papers should be sent to Peter Claughton - P.F.Claughton@exeter.ac.uk<mailto:p.F.Claughton@exeter.ac.uk>  Or ring me on +44 (0)1437 532578

Please note that there is a lecture program only option of ?12 per day for the Saturday and Sunday.
Normal all in delegate fee is ?40, or ?35 for early birds.
Camping is ?12 per head for each night Friday and Saturday, ?6 Thursday and Sunday.

Just to let you know that the booking website is now on line.

The link in my post above just takes you to a hosting company that is unfit for purpose, please use either www.cambrianmines.co.uk or the NAMHO site: https://www.namho.org/conf2019/conf_booking_create.php

Just a heads up as we are approaching June and bookings will be closing in a few weeks.

To be clear, the event title is misleading in that it is actually a "conference and field meet"
Most attendees will be there to go underground and there is a lot on offer.

There are also some trips on offer that may appeal more to you cavers more than mine explorers, neck deep water etc.
Also a nice little SRT round trip through some interesting stuff. I am working to try and get everything completed in time.

I intend to see that nobody misses out. However there is an advanced SRT trip on the Sunday (Rosa/Pughs) that is restricted on numbers. I cannot help this its down to the nature of the trip.

There really is something there for everybody.
