DVD NEW Original, not a copy.  Fight for life.  The Neil Moss Story. The story of the heroic attempt to rescue a trapped caver from the narrow confines of a shaft in the depths of Peak Cavern in March 1959.
CASTLETON'S Peak Cavern is one of Derbyshire's foremost show caves, old history of legend and human habitation. On March 22 1959 Neil Moss extensive and labyrinthine passages beyond the show cave in the company of a small fellow cavers; they were set to explore a narrow shaft that led down from a large chamber nearly a mile from daylight.
Neil willingly descended the shaft in the hope of discovering new passages beneath but a series of unfortunate circumstances led to his becoming trapped. Subsequent attempts to free him began what developed into the biggest cave rescue attempt this country has ever seen.  Well over 200 cavers and rescue workers, as well as countless villagers, were involved. Many fought deep underground to release the Oxford undergraduate from the grip of the hard unyielding rock, but he sadly died 35 hours after first becoming trapped.
The events of that weekend and its tragic outcome were themselves the stuff of nightmares,  but the persistence and heroism of his would-be rescuers, many of whom had never ventured underground before, lifted the spirits. Today the rescue attempt is remembered by caves not only for its sad outcome, but for being a catalyst for the complete reorganisation of the Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation.
This film has been extensively researched to be as factually accurate as possible and may help dispel some of the myths that persist to this day surrounding the rescue attempt and its aftermath; it is told by some of those directly involved nearly fifty years ago.  Running time approx 50 minutes.  DVD ?5.00

DOWN TO A SUNLESS SEA by J M[ike] Boon 1977  105 pp, 4 surveys of which 3 are large fold out ones.  I like the story of caving in Ireland on a shoestring (as were most of his trips). He was camping on a farm and after accidentally burning his tent down he had to borrow some clothes from the farmer in order to travel home again!  Mike Boon was a British caver who was active from the late 1950s thru the 1970s.  You might know him from the accounts of early Swindon?s dives, but he also surveyed (with Tich Morris) the entrance series of Darren Cilau - 'nuff said?  Mike went on to become famous, caving in Mexico when Mexico wasn't cool, did a solo expedition to the back of Castleguard Cave in Canada, and was considered by some to be the best caver in the world... and currently lives quietly in Calgary [2011].  First copy I have seen in over 30 years.  Correction 030313 a copy just sold on fleabay for ?78.76 + post.  HB as new.  ?75.00

Hey Tony,

Id like the dvd please about the rescue.
Also I'll be starting my dissertation soon and I'm hoping to focus on caving/caves maybe something along the lines of humans relationship with caves in UK throughout history, so if you've got anything about archaeology like paviland or historical stuff that would be great. Cheers Liz

if the dvd has gone by the time Tony reads this, you can always get it direct from the author, Dave Webb. I can give  you contact details. Just read about Paviland on Wikipedia, very interesting. I can send you a copy of a report documenting an arch dig on Beeston Tor a few years ago if that's any use / interest. Regards, Mel.

There is a book...

PAVILAND CAVE AND THE ?RED LADY?: a definitive report by Stephen Aldhouse-Green with a foreword by Rhodri Morgan and contributions from A Brookes, D Q Bowen, P Bull, D Case, N Debenham, A Eastham, T Holliday, M Ivanovich, R Jones, A Latham, D J Lowe, R Mourne, P B Pettitt, M Richards, S Swainston, B C Sykes, E Trinkaus, A Turner, E A Walker and T Young.  2001  314 pp 16 page colour section, 132 figs, 113 tables 39 colour illustrations.  Cavers visiting the Gower would probably dismiss the caves as mainly a collection of little holes, not worthy of closer inspection.  However, few can have little concept of the archaeological and historical importance of the caves, though sporadic excavation over the last 200 years indicated that there was more here than at first seemed obvious.  Before the 1800?s little was committed to paper, but in 1823 the Reverend William Buckland, Professor of Geology at Oxford University excavated in Paviland Cave and discovered the partial remains of a skeleton, covered in red ochre.  He detailed his results in Reliquiae Diluvianae.  At the time, the finds were considered to be that of a woman and it was thought that she was probably a witch and that the red ochre was part of a sacrificial ritual.  Later studies show the skeleton to be that of a young man, probably a chieftain or a shaman, and that the covering red ochre was either placed there for warmth or to improve the appearance of the body.  HB
