Can you use a double-fishermans with tape?

A friend (who is on this forum) and I were having a chat, and I was asked "why can't I use a double-fishermans to join two lengths of tape, rather than a tape/water knot?"

I have no clue. Tape is weird thing to tie, and all the advice I can easily find says "and the tape knot is great for joining slings and the double fishermans is great for joining cord"

The thing is, I don't like the tape knot because it comes undone/slips quite easily, and the double (triple) fishermans does so much less.

So what should be used for joining tape together, and does anyone have any interesting sources about knots in tape?

And based on these results:

Why on earth does anyone (eg here) recommend using a tape knot to join tape when it simply isn't the best knot?

As far as I can see, Triple Fishermans should be best practice?

Dyneema is a special case in that it:
a) doesn't grip on itself very well
b) is massively weakened by knotting

Your original post mentions climbing; two advantages of a standard tape knot over a triple fisherman's are less tape required (or a longer sling for a given length of tape) and much lower bulk (important if threading slings in a climbing situation). For climbing I far prefer sewn slings, for the second reason.

The only situation most people would knot tape would be when abseiling down a mountain which isn't equipped, or where the tat is old and looks dodgy. In those cirumstances, a double or tripe fisherman's would be stronger than a tape knot, and the bulk wouldn't matter, though the wuantity of tape would. You would be better off carrying some 6mm cord to cut and knot, maybe?
