Bivy Bag Wanted

Try your local army surplus shop - I got one for ?30, never been used, goretex etc. Makes you look like a giant cammo condom. luuush!

I've discussed the above with Fiona now and the bivi bag I have here is probably too good for what she wants to use one for. In case anyone else wants one, it's as new, with an optional small hooped pole at shoulder level (i.e. for really lightweight trips you leave the pole behind). It's plain green (not army camo) and I'll sell it for ?50, which is a LOT less than I paid for it. If interested, just PM me to sort out getting it to you.

dont know what your intending to use the bag for so not sure what you need but have you considered using an orange survival bag they get a bit sweaty but only cost a couple of quid and keep the rain out should be able to get one at bat products id of thought.

Ian - I've corresponded with Fi (as I know her anyway) and the bag I have here is too good a quality for what she wants. I reckon she'd end up wetter in a poly bag than without one since she wants to kip in a dry underground camp. Turns out that her main concern is staying warm rather than staying dry - really she wants an extra layer to keep heat in. So I've suggested that she scrounges an old cotton flysheet (e.g. off a Vango Force 10 tent or similar) and rolls up in that (inside her normal sleeping bag of course) or even sews up a purpose made bag from the old flysheet. If she treats it with a proofer it should "breathe" enough to stop her waking up soaked but also keep some heat in. Hopefully it'd also be a low or even zero cost option!

Years ago I scrounged a huge bagful of offcut nylon from Cameron Balloons in Bristol. From this I made several useful bits n bobs including a lightweight bivvy bag (proofed, like the above suggestion, with spray -on something).
I dont know if Cameron still do this but ripstop nylon is probably quite cheap these days from a market stall.....?

only posible problem with that would be that force ten canvas doesnt like being left in the damp being a bit prone to mold so youd have to take it in and out every trip id of thought and it aint light either youd probably be better of with ripstop i s'pect though not sure how breathable/durable it would be

Anyway, she's now found a cheap non goretex (I think) bivi bag, so she's sorted.

Blizzard bags are very good, website.  Slept in one at Camp One of the Berger when I couldn't find the (elusive) spare sleeping bag.  Only cost ?25.  Might not be hard wearing enough though?
