Dipl Med REGINA H?SSELBARTH

Diploma for Hygiene, Speleologist and amateur Geologist 22.1.1950 - 17.8.1986

On the 17 August 1986 one of East Germany's leading cavers died in a cave diving accident.

Regina was a member of a combined expedition of Freiberg Cavers and Zwickau Cave Divers called "West Balken 86". They planned to spend a quiet two weeks caving in Bulgaria. She went as the expedition's doctor with four other cavers and it was whilst diving in the Duschnicata Cave near Sofia that she drowned. The circumstances of her death are still a mystery. The Vice President of the Bulgaria Tourist Association has described the accident as due to inexperience, but this is untrue. Regina had many years caving experience and had caved all over Eastern Europe. She has also been caving diving in Bulgaria in previous years. Regina was a frequent contributor to The British Caver, always first with the latest cave news from Eastern Europe. She wrote numerous articles for local newsletters and organised many training meets. She will be dearly missed.
