Robin Hanbury-Tennison, who led the famous RGS expedition to Mulu in 1978-9 that saw the discovery of the Clearwater system and many other discoveries in several branches of science, is seriously ill with coronavirus. Very sad news. I hope he pulls through.

Very sad news. I consider him to be one of the greatest 20th century explorers, and his account of his (mainly) solo crossing of South America by canoe from the mouth of the Orinoco to Buenos Aires, to be the finest piece of exploration writing I have read. An awesome guy who has done a lot for indigenous people around the world.

He's demonstrated a lot of resilience in the past - I just hope that that resilience will see through his illness.

Agreed, he is remarkable - read his book, Finding Eden, last year about his exploration in Mulu. He is clearly a robust guy, all strength to him.
