Trip report
27/8/16 Aber Las dive
On Saturday UKMC members Alan, Tim, and Briggsy visited Aber Las mine. Unfortunately due to equipment damage (that was sustained on the surface) only Alan and Tim were able to dive.
Alan had purchased a nice new shiny telescopic ladder which allowed us easy access into the adit, with the why seemed like mountains of dive kit.
We hauled the equipment down the slop to the waters edge, and used a nice bit of cart track to establish an in air primary tie off. We then kitted up, carried out our in water equipment checks, and descended. The mine "head pool" is known for poor visibility, and today was no exception, we tied into the permanent line and turned right into the shallow section of the mine.
After about 10m of swimming the visibility increased from about 1m to almost crystal clear. We observed a number of historical features and were amazed at the water clarity, once the dive limits were reached we turned around and headed back home.
During the dive we noted that the nylon line was very good condition, and clearly marked.
Following surfacing we has a surface interval, and due to ample gas supplies we headed back in for a look at the cavern which leads to the deep route, which allowed for a few nice camera opportunities.
After returning safely to the surface, we then started the process of getting everything back up the slope and out of the adit.
After a cup of tea and a sandwich we went for a walk to find the main Cambrian entrance, and to locate the dive bases.
All in all a much enjoyed day
Below is some video from the trip shot by Alan. Enjoy folks
