Just seen this rather interesting article on the tinternet:

about making 3D surveys of sub glacial deposits using a sensor from a piece of gaming equipment as a cheaper version of a LIDAR scanner. Looks like it could be a really usefull piece of kit both for cave surveying or for detailed morphological mapping of cave features/sediment deposits.
