Glutton Dale/Aldery Cliff

Does anyone have any knowledge of a mine overlooking Glutton Dale at the extreme western end of Aldery Cliff? Just curious.

I spent several weeks in that general area trying to find all the caves from CoPD in the Dove Catchment for the online DCA Cave Registry.  There's quite a lot of land in between Glutton Dale and the valley that Aldery Cliff is on.  Can you give me a rough grid reference and I might be able to tell you.  ;)

I think it's mentioned in Chris Heathcote's article about Hartington Liberty in Mining History  - I'll have  look.

If you look on Google Earth you can spot a line of Hillocks. If you walked up to the bottom end of Glutton Dale from the BCA library then turn right up the hillside you pass very close to the western end of the Hillocks. The mine is running from the Eastern side of lower Glutton Dale, eastwards into the western flank of Aldery Cliff.

I don't think we've put that particular issue on line yet; I'll go through my physical copies later and find the relevant one.

Okay, from Mining History 18(3), Chris Heathcote mentions Barmaster's entries for Brunt Rake near Sterndale which ranged east-west; the location is a bit obscure but the majority of the known rakes around Earl Sterndale are north-south. He also mentions entries for two other mines on an east-west vein, Itterill's Mine which looks to be on the east side of Glutton dale going up onto Hitter Hill, and another mine to the west on the same rake which is recorded as crossing Parkhouse Hill, but the vein apparently crosses the road between Glutton Farm and Glutton Bridge. So, I think Brunt Rake is the best candidate.  This article will be going online in the near future, along with the rest of vol.18, but our webmaster has been out of action.

On the subject of grid refs, the quickest way to get one is to use this site -  http://gridreferencefinder.com/ which uses Google maps, you can drop a marker in and get a 10-figure grid ref back.

AG, that's brilliant. It will definitely be the one with the rake which crosses the road between Glutton Bridge and Glutton Farm. Following the rake eastwards from above the road. If I've got it right, you think this is "Brunt Mine".  Many thanks for your time and trouble AG.

I had a look in this mine a few years ago.  The lowest and most obvious level is fairly short with no workings.  Higher up a hole gives access to another level with some largely collapsed workings at the end.  These are below the depressions on the hillside above and appear to be partly natural.  Also worth a look are the workings to the east of the road as you travel from Jericho farm towards Brierlow barn.  The sleepers just behind the layby on the road can be moved to give access to a stope which needs a ladder.
