Just wondering what type of grid system you like or indeed need to have on a notepad for surveying?

Whats the best surveying type pad you have used? and what sort of price are you paying now?

Hope our friendly Mods dont mind me doing a bit of research.... 

The Chartwell waterproof books I have, have a 5mm square grid or a 6mm line on one side and blank on the reverse.

We designed our own based on the two different survey styles (from->to in columns, and offset with arrows) (links at bottom) used by expedition members.
I massively prefer the arrows style one, though you need to be careful to form legible arrows, and make use of the redundant 'S'tation columns!

The 95p A5 Gelert books are great for the price (particularly when used in the BCB green plastic covers - snug fit in a Meander oversuit pocket), and the paper is just thin enough to trace the laser-printed designs with a fine-line indelible marker & ruler. When printing them, we have a 5mm / 1mm grid in light blue (more contrast with grey pencil + brown mud) on the flipside. Every ~third page in the survey book is left blank for general note taking  / forming PSSes (expediton).

Certainly having prepared grids has massively improved the general quality of data that comes back from the 'front'. Otherwise you'd get people trying to draw up the blank book with a blunt pencil while shivering under a waterfall, not ideal.

Of course, this is all in the context of lightweight expedition 'survey what you find on the day' exploration, but it certainly seems to work well for that!

9 columns?

From station

To station

length

compass bearing

inclination

distance station to left wall (left)

distance station to right wall (right)

distance station to ceiling (up)

distance station to floor (down)

I'd add two more columns:-

date readings taken. (For future reference.)

description of survey station in case not permanently marked.
