Expedition Training Workshop

Just a reminder that if anyone's bored this weekend then they're welcome to come along to the Belfry where we'll be running an exped training workshop.  Aimed primarily at the Dachstein mob but anyone is welcome (except for really annoying-types!).  We'll be covering surveying, srt, rigging, emergency stuff, srt rescue etc, and will be doin a rescue practice somewhere too.  Should be a good weekend and a perfect excuse not to do anything meaningful....

Grizzled veterans can always assist if they can be bothered.

Well you should beware making disparaging remarks about the efforts of the extremely experienced expedition cavers (like Joel, Phil, Rich Hudson etc..) giving up their free time to pass on their skills and expertise.

Mind your assumptions, matey. No, frankly, I'm amazed that there are trainees out there who can take in that amount of information over a two day period. It's amazing. I guess it's possible since the experienced organisers wouldn't be providing it if it wasn't. It would be way beyond me to take in that amount of info in 48hrs but that just proves how rubbish I am. Disparaging? About myself, maybe.

Fine - if you want to play that game - most cavers I know have the back bone to say what they mean.

The implication of your words is that the organisers shouldn't be trying to get this much content into a short space of time. (if this isn't your opinion then you have a very funny way of wording things!)

Well beware your assumptions then as there is no comment here about the depth of the topics or the experience level of the participants. The idea is not to be able to take novice cavers in on Friday and turn out seasoned veterans by Sunday - but for everyone to learn something, improve their level of knowledge and get something out of the weekend. There will be many different cavers of varied experience and ability and putting on lots of different sessions gives everyone the chance to learn something. The intention is not for everyone to master all of these, perhaps some people will even just focus on one topic rather than all of them.

The reason I posted my comments in the first place is because providers of SRT training for newcomers do so over a two day period; anyone reading that it's possible to learn SRT, SRT rigging, rescue and surveying in two days is, understandably, going to cry foul and say "How come it's taking two days to teach me SRT when these other guys are doing so much more in the same period?". The advertised training this coming weekend gives a distinct impression that people can learn a helluva lot in 48hrs - your subsequent explanation that people can pick and mix and learn a bit of this, and a bit of that, makes far more sense than the original post.

I imagine there are people out there who could learn everything in 48hrs (provided they never sleep and have a photographic memory); however, this begs the question of why SRT training, as outlined by BCA Training Committee, is run over two days, just for the basic no-frills techniques.

OOOH, my mistake, apparently, as in fact we're fitting all of that training into 48 minutes, and not 48 hours....  Guess that's the issue with posting things on an open forum, as you always need to cater to the lowest common denominator in terms of common sense.  Of course we're not teaching people to put on a harness then survey a deep shaft at the same time that we're doing a pick-off rescue.  Are we really that dumb?  And I really don't give a monkey's about the BCA standards of training because we're not doing this for financial gain.  And some of us have been training people for decades without the necessary badge to go with it.  So there.

As I said, anyone's welcome to come along for instruction or to assist.  Because we're non-elitist even though some of us are better than others.  (that was a joke, by the way, as I'm catering to the lowest common denominator from now on).

Actually, having just re-read the entire thread I can't make out whether or not I was the victim of disparaging remarks or if it was mine and Mr J's imagination!  So if I got the wrong end of the stick then just pretend that I never wrote anything in the first place.  If I didn't get it wrong the re-read my previous thread as if it was written in capitals.  Isn't the internet wonderful?  Will be in the Hunters later if anyone wants to smack me!

I got the impression from Joel's first posting that this was for people to come along and pick 'bits & bobs' that they wanted to know a bit more about or brush up on. I also thought that as it was primarily aimed at the 'Dachstein mob' these people would range from 'fairly experienced to very experienced'. In summary the weekend was not to teach anyone all of the subjects in this space of time. I'm just pleased that there are people willing to help out anyone who attends. Perhaps they can teach me some freeclimbing techniques when my foot gets better!

Wish I could go  instead im moving house. I think it makes sense for people to  brush up, most of the people going (who im aware of) are more than capable cavers but are seeking to better them selves by hauling themselves from the pub.

Thanks Joel and all the other organisers of this weekend. I now feel I know everything there is to know about SRT, rigging, rescue, first aid and surveying. But then I am a genius. Hehehehehe!!!
