The most famous caver in the German speaking work is the well known and highly respected Slovenian speleologist Dr France Habe. born January 11, 1909 in Vrhnika, which is not tar from the well-known karst spring of Ljubljana. Therefore, it is not surprising that Dr Habe has made karst studies his life's work.

Grammar school was followed in 1932 by the study of History and Geography at the University of Ljubljana. After graduation he taught in various grammar schools in the north of Yugoslavia before moving to Postojna and Rakek. With his fellow teachers who included Ivan Michler he began his study of karst phenomena. Later, as a member, and then as chairman, of the Federation of Slovenian Caver explorers, he explored the caves of the area Since 1950 he has specialised in the study of karst and caves of the Postojna area Here results of his intensive activities are 184 new discoveries, 150 articles published and about 15,000 photos taken. In 1964 he was awarded a doctorate by the University of Ljubljana for his dissertation ?Morphology, hydrology and speleological developments of the northern part of the Pivka basin and its significance to the Predjama cave system?. In 1965 he became a member of the Karst Institute of the Slovene Academy of Science at Postojna and worked there until his retirement in 1976 by which time he was the Director After his retirement he was still as active as ever working for the protection of the Skocjanske Caves and campaigning against the pollution of the Reka river. He was also appointed as Director of the world famous Postojna Cave.

Prof Dr France Habe was for 6 years President and 4 years Vice President of the Federation of Yugoslav Cave Explorers as well as Secretary of the Slovenian Cave Explorers From 1977 to 1986 he was a member of the Bureau of the International Union of Speleology and a long time secretary of the Commission for Cave and Karst Conservation of the IUS
