With grateful thanks to Andy Chapman, we are privileged to have been able to add half a dozen interviews with Dr. Derek Ford to the Audio Archive.

Derek is one of the most influential and respected karst scientists of his generation, with over 300 academic papers and letters to his name. Born in Bath where he started caving at an early age on Mendip, he gained a PhD from Oxford under the supervision of pioneering karst geomorphologist Marjorie Sweeting, and joined the Geography Department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1964. Here he turned his hobby into a profession, and under his leadership the university became renowned for its karst studies attracting students and researchers from all over the world.

Included in these interviews, Derek discusses his early caving on Mendip with the likes of Mike Boon, his career at McMaster University, the explorations in Castleguard Cave, the expansion of the Nahanni National Park, and his academic career.
