Beginners Cave & Helmet & Lamp Hire in the Peaks

Hi All,

I'm thinking of taking my teenage sons (17 & 15) for an explore of Giants Hole upper series as a caving taster session.

First of all would you recommend it for a 'has been' caver and his two sons. I have taken them into Great Douk and Long Churn in Yorkshire before now and they loved it but am looking for something closer to home. I've done a fair bit of forum browsing and Giants Hole Upper Series comes up regularly as a good beginners trip. I won't try the round trip, that sounds too advanced for us.

Secondly is there anywhere in the Peaks to hire helmets and lamps. Mine died years ago and the kids have never had any.

Thanks in advance,
Adrian

The only place i know of for helmet hire is http://www.peakinstruction.com/hire.htm

I believe the owner of the business can drop off the helmet at useful locations.

Have you been into peak cavern before? I would put it up there with the top three beginner locations and relatively easy to organise access. Please see the peak speedwell website for details (but you might need to join a club as a temporary member).

I'm sure there are other good beginner locations, but i'm running out of battery :)

Hitch and Hike used to hire before it closed a few weeks ago. Many thanks for the years of hire and caving chat.

Hi, Caving Supplies in Buxton still hire out lamps and helmets as far as I know. Why don't you get their number of their website and give Phill a call.

Thanks Al but Adrian would need to talk to Caving Supplies as I am not hiring helmets to the public, only to instructed parties. It's simply a safety precaution for my business. The people who borrowed a key to a well known mine and then sued the place they collected the key from has made my insurer and myself twitchy about kitting up persons of unknown ability or ethical persuasion. I'm sorry, it is nothing personal but that is how it is.
