Thieves Moss, Crummackdale

Out for a walk in Crummackdale today, we came across an interesting little hole at the top end of the valley. A tightish rift, which we had a peer into but didn't properly go in as we only had a pen torch between us. Looking in various books and on t'interweb, it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere.

From CKYD we have..

"A single exception is the small rising below Capple Bank which takes part of its flow from a tiny sink at the back of Thieves Moss." Could be you found that sink?

Rachel, is it near Moughton Whetstone Hole?

No. Heading north from Beggar's Stile towards Sulber Gate, the path starts to trend to the left just as it reaches the boundary between the limestone pavement and Thieve's Moss. The narrow rift is just to the right hand side of the path at that point.

No, it isn't one of those. The entrance was a rift about 3ft high and 18" wide, with evidence that it wasn't always that spacious. The passage continued for about 10 feet at these dimensions and then appeared to open up. There was a clear sound of water flowing coming from in the cave. From the outside it looked as though it was the sink for two small streams, although both were dry on the day alanw and I were there.

I'm fairly sure I know which dig this is. I think it is a dig made by Earby Pothole Club which went unrecorded at a time when they were quite active around that part of Ingleborough.

Thanks Simon. I'd be interested to find out what's beyond the entrance that we had a poke into. A bit of kit inside the cave suggested that this is still an ongoing project.

Up until recently it would have been a hassle to get SSSI permission to dig. But thanks to the excellent work of both the CNCC and Natural England there is now a new protocol for digging on the Ingleborough Estate.
