17th September Little Crapnell Swallet
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:31:37 pm »
A bit of a photo report for this week's trip. My camera is a bit notorious in the club for having 9 lives.. it's not a tough camera, just a normal point and press. It's been completely soaked in water twice, dropped into the sand, dropped off the roaches, clogged with cave dust and dirt. I'd chucked it into my bag whilst rushing out the house for the trip forgetting my cave bag was full of dust and dirt. As soon as we got into the cave it refused to work and needed lots of tapping/cleaning out of the lens with the cave survey to get it moving.. When it finally spluttered into life I took a shot of the rock eye which had been staring at me whilst I was faffing about.. It reminded us all of an american canyon..

Does anyone know what type of rock this is?

Weird cat shadow at the top!

We headed out the cave before reaching the end of the cave, there were three of us on the trip, the other two were fine, but I didn't think the air felt too great, we headed back out after starting the 'meandering crawl'. There's some demanding squeezes in the came one reminded me of one in Daren Cilau. It felt a great privilege to visit the cave despite the difficulty.

Some excellent photos there!

Can anyone else see a sort of demonic face grinning at them in photo number 4?

Or is it just a case of having too many "camels" and "maps of India" pointed out to me when I was a nipper?

At a guess, the 'eye' is a multi-layer calcite with different coloured layers that has subsequently been eroded & thus displays the banding rather nicely.

I also thought the air wasn't great, it was hard work in there. I was pretty glad we turned around where we did.
Unfinished business for a return visit sometime.

It was a great trip, and thankfully the tight/intimidating sections were rewarded with pretty stuff.  Definitely worth a return when there's some water flowing into it and oxygen levels lower down are hopefully better

No!  You might get a more positive answer if you ask those who actually believe in demons, fairies, gods and other such nonsense!
