Visiting the Peak District 10th-14th December.

Evening all.

I am visiting the Peak District next month. I am on a course during the day and have arranged to stay at the Orpheus.

I would very much like to go caving whilst I'm there.

Any suggestions? Anyone free to take me on a trip or three?

I'd like to go to Peak Cavern if possible.

Kriss.
I'll happily return the favour for anyone wanting to visit the Mendips in the future.

Change of plan! I am now coming a week earlier on the 3rd December if anyone is around to take me caving, please? ;)

Chris, I could potentially be available. Had an interview yesterday which was positive, so might not have as much liberal use of time as I have now. If you badger me closer to the time then I can arrange a trip for you. Peak is could be an option if I'm available.

What's on your "todo" list? And what trips are you happy doing? SRT? If so what size of pitch?

Good news about the interview.

I am happy to do whatever! The only issue I have is tight squeezes, I just don't fit. With regards to SRT, I'm fairly new to it, got good basic skills going up and down. Biggest pitch I've done so far is roughly 15 metres.

With regards to a "to do" list I don't really know where the caves are in relation to the Orpheus. I just know Peak Cavern is the most famous. I'm willing to take your advice on which caves to visit, I'd be grateful for anything.

That's great, there's loads of caves that don't need much SRT, people like to rush for the big SRT trips. But there's some classics which only involve a small amount of SRT or none at all.

I've never done Mouldridge Mine (Bradford Catchment), which is in South Derbyshire. doesn't require any SRT, I think it's popular with groups.

and round the Orpheus is the Lathkill Catchment which has Hillocks mine and a few other assorted entrances, Hillocks whalf shaft has recently been renovated, but does contain a few rebelays in the 45m rope, so could be an option?

Caves that should also be on your list are P8 and Giants, absolute classics (but both in the Castleton Catchment).

Also up in the Castleton Catchment is Oxlow Caverns, whilst none of the Pitches are particularly long, with 4 pitches each less than 20m long (but requiring more rope), adds up to quite a classic trip. It is popular as the trip is mostly dry, with a small chance of drips landing on you.

They all sound brilliant.

As I don't know the area I am more than happy to go wherever you suggest. By the sounds of it you know what you're talking about.

I'm looking forward to it already.

Mouldridge is quite good fun, as you go into the first enlarged space, there's a way down to the lower levels on the left, with various slots to wiggle through. If you go up and right at roughly the same point there are plenty of exploration opportunites. Right at the rear of the main level are a few shafts, they should be well signposted not to enter. All in all you can while away an hour or two.

If you want 'real' caving in 'fairly' new (sort of off-limit) discoveries on a certain hillside near Castleton, I can put you touch with someone who will give you authority in exchange for a donation of monetary value.

Will do, thank you.
