Ah a sensible answer, Thanks Graham. Never used a combi unit before, any idea
if its better than having two seperate units?

I've never used one either, Alex, but they are significantly cheaper.

I am sure one of the BEC kits is combi - worth asking for a looksee or borrow that instead of buying?

I'm glad you got a sensible answer*. As for the combi unit, I have only used one at the Hidden Earth surveying competition, and didn't like it. I much prefer the two separate.

* Having been chastised for making frivolous comments on serious topics, I was quite surprised by the initial reply!!!

i didn't get on with the combi at all - i'm left eye dominant and right handed and it doesn't seem to be easy to use where the individual compass and clino is fine.

In fact why not just use the BEC kit? or are you expecting to need to hang on to them for some considerable time? ;)

For me I think I just found the unit too big, and it's odd shape made it awkward to hold as I wanted. We still won the competition, though! Being used to separate units probably didn't help either. But were I to be buying new, I would be sorely tempted by any significant savings.

I agree - slightly unhelpful, just my way of saying I haven't got a clue, and meant light heartedly. Not really off topic either.
Since Alex can surely use google, and with a Suunto being a relatively specialist bit of kit with retail outlets in the UK being thin on the ground, added to the fact that I seriously doubt anyone on here would 'know' the answer without googling it themselves I just thought it was a bit of a pointless question, the answer to which Alex could probably have found out by the time he'd finished typing the question into UKcaving.

Be nice to find out the results of your search though alex... come on - where is the cheapest retail outlet for a suunto compass.

Oh - and as for Grahams answer being sensible - 119 quid is about 45 quid more expensive that the first entry that comes back out of Google for "Suunto KB-14"

So my advice Alex, would still be to do your own googling than rely on people here  o_O

Let's leave the topic to those who have got a clue, then, shall we? I have related my limited experience of the combi unit, but that's as far as it goes, so I will bow out gracefully. Hope you find what you want, Alex.

You could always borrow our cave-surveying secret weapon, our pet "Oaty"!... he's a Sherpa Attack Donkey and very useful for drawing up subterranean surveys...

Mind you, he's crap at sherpa-ing, attacking, being a donkey and caving... but other than that he's quite a workhorse (pardon the pun).

Love you too, Sam.  :icon_321:  FYI the link I gave was to the official importer.

that makes it the cheapest then  :-\ (which lets fact it - is what Alex is after since one retailer is unlikely to be able to offer anything 'better' than another).

I'm not here to pick fights - Just trying to be helpful which in the light of things posted after - my first post was :halo:

Hi where's the best place (cheapest) to purchase a suunto compass and clino ?
Thanks

Alex

I have a Suunto Compass and Clino (two units) which I could loan you.  I now have a SAP & Disto A4 which I use exclusively.  Not going to sell or give away, but available for extended loan - witness being in the display case at Wells Museum (along with a load of diving gear) for 8 weeks - so I'm not going to miss it.

Duncan

PS. I have several Fribron tapes as well.  Email me.

I think that Wookey is still an importer of Compass and Clinos, and imagine he is still far cheaper than you can get else where.

I have sent you his email address via other methods.

The real question is why would anyone use a compass and clino now-a-days. The results are just not worth the effort.

(now that should start aome replies :D
